I finished up my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat run a couple nights ago. I didn't really want to backtrack to Clear Sky (which I skipped this run-through of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s), so I decided I'd try one of the massive overhaul mods, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly. I quickly figured out that it's way too "realistic" in it's overwhelming crafting system additions, ammunition quality, and bastard-hard-ness for my tastes, but it does some cool stuff (Like gluing all the maps from the original trilogy into one free-roam sandbox, and throwing in the cut maps from the early alpha/demo versions just because, but also re-placing all the anomalies because the Emissions were supposed to change the locations of the anomlies, but that was beyond the scope of the original games). It also updated the maps to show that some time had passed since the games.
Then while trying to learn how to play Anomaly, I found out there's a mod for the mod called Old World, which largely returns the item variety and such back to feeling like the original games, while still adding some neat new features and items. So I immediately sank a half dozen hours into re-exploring the zone 😸.

So... @fedora has made a policy explicitly allowing AI code. So I have to change my home distro.
@gentoo and @netbsd both have specific policies against it, but I ain't about doing a Gentoo install (sorry, guys, I love you for this, but I need a binary first distro), and NetBSD ain't great for gaming AFAIK.
Just a public statement that says "No, we don't want that crap" would be plenty --- I understand the difficulty of enforcing the policy, but setting it as a community/commit standard would go a long way towards making a lot of us feel better.
chimera-linux.org/community/#c… explicitly refers to "AI" as a scam fad in the same set of parentheses as cryptocurrency, among other good policies, if that helps any. Chimera Linux is a very... *new* distro, though, so may not be what you're looking for
@iris I am absolutely fascinated by the Chimera project. It's definitely on my radar. I've set up Gentoo and FreeBSD desktops, so I feel like I could get into it if I decide to, but I'm not sure I want to dive that deep in just now.
Both, actually, although I'm currently leaning towards Chimera or maybe Alpine. Or hell, I could go BSD, although FreeBSD is allowing AI documentation.
@undead @drwho yeah, BSDs in general aren't great for gaming. If I do go BSD, it'll probably be FreeBSD because of Linuxulator, but for everything else I'd kinda prefer Open.
I think a lot of people are averse to doing this for the simple fact that it is nearly impossible to stop it at this point. Yes, some people will say that they can tell when something was generated by AI, but they are talking about current level and previous level generative systems. Which, as we have already seen, are progressing at some phenomenal rates and will soon be truly indistinguishable.

I feel at least making noises of objection and even a token effort to say "no" is the absolute least that can be done.
I have rewritten this toot five times now to remove sardonic passive aggressiveness from it. "It's hard" is never, ever an excuse for making an ethical decision.
And there's nothing inevitable about this. If at some point some AI code gets through, whatever, that doesn't mean just lay back and think of England.
@nikatjef no matter what rules and laws you put into place, people are gonna get pickpocketed. That doesn't mean you announce that pickpocketing is now okay.
@nikatjef Yeah I feel like the least they could possibly do is simply NOT openly embrace it. Like maybe it is hard to stop. Maybe it is going to increasingly produce workable code. Doesn't mean they have to look at this and publicly go "fuck yeah, do it!"

Code or other content generated in whole or in part using AI tools can be contributed to Linux Foundation projects. However, there are some unique considerations related to AI generated content that developers should factor into their contributions.
the point is that we don't need another vector that adds *more* bugs, particularly one that encourages (and may cause) laziness in its users.
Think of it this way: if I have a pond, I'll have mosquitoes. The best way to deal with those mosquitoes isn't to add a water feature. That's just gonna exacerbate the problem.
Setting ethical questions aside, if AI was better, I wouldn't complain. But it's not — it's just one more way to add broken code, except now with the added bonus of *less* human oversight.
But even if it *was* better, there's still the ethical issues, which won't go away even if LLMs become perfect coders.
So yeah, what you say is true. But it also doesn't really matter.
@argv_minus_one I'm not a fan of AI generated code, but "AI can create subtle bug" is not an argument for me, because people can also implement code with subtle bugs.
For example, I was once in a project, where we found a bug, that was incorrectly calculating some stats only on one certain day every year. We found that only because we tested this feature exactly on this day. And it was VERY subtle bug, and very hard to find. And it happend years before LLM ls were even created.
@leniwcowaty I'm using a Debian based system right now. It's pretty great. Mint remains the distro I recommend to people wanting to try out Linux (although I wish they'd bite the bullet and go Debian exclusively and leave the Ubuntu code behind, for simplicity's sake if nothing else).
@stuartl I'm aware of Moccachino OS and have come close to trying it a few times. I mean… the name alone! I'm not sure why I haven't just gone ahead and done it. A lot of the stuff they're doing seems neat.
I'm currently playing with PikaOS, which is a gaming focused distro (think Nobara but with a bird theme and a Debian base). But Moccachino is probably next on my list.
@rubinjoni @manjarolinux I got burned by Manjaro a long time ago and haven't really wanted to go back. I won't go into details — I ain't tryna get anyone to leave any Distro except Fedora, and if it works for you, awesome.
But if I were to go Arch based, I'd either go with Arch itself, CachyOS, or Endeavor (or something weird and obscure; I tend to like weird and obscure).
@a_blahaj @drwho I've done Arch installs the Arch way and with archinstall and the installer is quicker and requires less Linux knowledge, but neither is particularly difficult.
And the Arch Wiki is THE resource for general purpose Linux troubleshooting and information. It's very well organized and maintained, and super easy to use.
And despite a reputation to the contrary, the Arch community is pretty welcoming, provided you a.) check the wiki first (since that's what it's there for), and b.) you don't act like an entitled prick.
All that said… yeah, Calamares and other graphical installers are easier and sometimes even faster. I can have an Endeavor system up and running in like 15 minutes.
Arch is great, and basically all information you'll ever need about Arch Linux (and, heck; linux in general) is there. You can also use archinstall if you're lazy. I won't judge.
It all should work well unless you have an NoVideo GPU. then things get fucky.
Some things about #Friendica absolutely fuckin suck, like trying to post a picture in a comment, for example.
Step 1: Start writing comment. Step 2: Click the "add picture" button. Step 3: upload said picture to your wall images. step 4: Re-start writing the comment, since that disappeared as soon as you started step 2 step 5: click the "add picture" button again. step 6: pick the picture. step 7: re-start writing the comment AGAIN, since after step 6 the comment box vanishes. This time when you open it there will be a picture link inside a bunch of BBcode/HTML/Markdown/Whatever fucking formatting Friendica uses.
There's a lot I like about Friendica, but I absolutely understand why essentially noone in the fediverse uses it.
One thing I do quite like about #Friendica is the little icon that tells me exactly why a post ended up in my feed. It tells me if I'm following the person directly, if it's from a hashtag I'm following, if it's from a relay, or if it's from a comment someone I follow posted on it

These pulsating stars have been used to accurately determine NGC 3370's distance. NGC 3370 was chosen for this study because in 1994 the spiral galaxy was also home to a well studied stellar explosion -- a Type Ia supernova. Combining the known distance to this standard candle supernova, based on the Cepheid measurements, with observations of supernovas at even greater distances has helped to reveal the size and expansion rate of the entire Universe itself.
