I got both a Bonfire and a Streams Repository instance installed and running, I just don't have the brainwidth today to set up accounts on them.

Pretty painless install and setup on both through yunohost, though, and neither needs to use an authorization email for the first user (I still don't have the email ports open on my vps)

Their indiegogo page has a rough roadmap of their plans, as well as probably explaining Bonfire a little better, but it seems like it's a common comment that Bonfire could use way clearer messaging.

I've figured out I don't use Friendica as much as I'd like because there's just more friction points for me than mastodon or gotosocial. Friendica takes longer to load pages, there are more required pageloads to do certain things than the other server types. It takes a hacky workaround to mute a hashtag which only works in one particular custom timeline (with several pageloads required to do so),.

Anyway, I think I'm gonna try out selfhosting a Streams Repository server and I also wanna check out Bonfire so I'll probably fire up one of them too. If I like one more than Friendica I'll probably shut down this friendica server. That'll let me repurpose the.icosahedron.network as a webpage or something, since I've heard it's not the best idea to run different types of AP servers on the same url?

Sorry to see you go. Friendica instances are few and far between but it also sounds like you don't care if you don't federate with Diaspora, which Mastodon does not. IMHO they both have their quirks, and loading speed doesn't sound like a Friendica-dependent function, but that of the ISP. But what do I know, I've never been a sysop...er...I mean admin.

Yeah, I haven't really inerfaced with the diaspora network much at all, so losing the ability to federate doesn't affect my thought process here. Losing the RSS reader capability is a much bigger deal, but the only fedi server types that I know that RSS read natively are Friendica and Hubzilla (Which I really did not care for).

It may be that my VPS is underpowered for a friendica instance. I don't personally run the mastodon instance I'm using for speed comparisions, so I don't know what the specs are on that vps, or even how heavy mastodon and friendica comparitively are on resource-intensiveness.

I wish all fedi software/interfaces always had a "start writing post now" button. Too often a fedi thingy will only put the Write Post button on the main timeline page, which means by the time I click to a different page and wait for it to load I've often forgotten what I was gonna say.

One of the bad parts of having active accounts on three different types of fediverse servers is that the interface on all of them is different on each in a hundred tiny ways. Which means that I have to re-figure out how to do stuff in each one pretty much every time I switch. And since I'm not solely using one, I don't really build up the "mental muscle memory" to just know what each little icon means and what it does and how it works on this particular server.

It's kinda like if you've used photoshop a lot (for example), and then you were trying to do stuff in Krita and GnIMP. You have to figure out what each icon is, how it's different, what this particular software decides to call a feature (that has a completely different name than the feature did in the other softwares), where they've tucked away all the settings and tools.

Yeah, eventually using all three will be natural to you, but it's a lot easier to learn each in isolation that to try to keep three conflicting sets of HOW TO USE in your mind.

I always loathed Reagan and what made it worse was how people would insist he was charming... at least it was widely accepted that Nixon was a creep* but even people who disagreed with Reagan somehow were dazzled by his so-called charisma. Ugh!

As one who lived through it, I can confirm this was indeed the point at which the die was cast.

One of his first actions was to fire striking air traffic controllers ushering in the era of both stressful flying & the destruction of unions.

How we got to Reagan was that the Republican Party committed itself to racism (dubbed, somewhat inappropriately, the southern strategy — plenty of northern racists, then & now).

I find it disillusioning to see the casual use of "AI" slowly creeping into our hacker circles. Most of the discussions about AI focus on the quality of its output. I think we're not doing a good job communicating its more fundamental dangers.

In this blog post I write about how tools shape who we are and why the resource intensiveness of AI is ingrained in its purpose. About the devaluation of skills, and power cycles.

When AI was first all the buzz, I downloaded gpt4all, and fed it a *ton* of Sega Dreamcast hacking notes I and others had compiled. Figured I could use it like a quick reference. First day, I tried to ask it some things, and was impressed how it had answers. Then I tried implementing the answers, and quickly realized it was constantly full of shit. Even when trained entirely locally on hyper specific documents, it'll lie and give me crazy bullshit answers. It's useless for this stuff

In order to actually effectively use AI like this, you have to know the subject to be able to constantly check its work, which defeats the purpose of using a cheat tool to get around knowing the subject. It's like a dunning-kruger machine, how much you trust it reveals how little you know about the subject.
