It was a weird game because, unlike nearly every other 80s arcade hit, it was deterministic -- the ghosts would do the same thing if you did precisely the same movements
so you could have patterns which -- if you executed them with the repetitive precision of a Chrysler line-robot -- could beat the game; no decision-making or strategy necessary
I was not bad! I bought the little paperback with the algorithms for solving it, and memorized them so I could solve it too

Yeah, the real issue is that there is no user visible setting to turn it off.
And there is no guarantee that a future Windows update won't just turn it back on.
@ghosttie I uninstalled Copilot when I installed Win11 about a year ago, and every time I see a post like this (or do a Windows Update) I double check to make sure it hasn't returned. Still nothing.
I think it's a combination of misinformation (mixing up Copilot+ hardware with Copilot software) and new people finding Copilot is being pushed on to their desktops, and maybe some of Microsoft's usual shenanigans mixed in.

@David_Kelly_SF we are in an eternal struggle, yes, an arms race of AI corps vs. humanity, so yes, it's important to fight the fight (and also have off ramps, which I'm also doing and encourage everyone to do)
It cannot be overstated how important it is to push back, show resistance, refuse the slop and send the message.
@David_Kelly_SF agreed on all counts, please tell all the dudes in my mentions that Linux "isn't easy" cuz I'm pretty tired of that sneering.
I've installed linux, I had dual boot for years, I'm not ignorant of the benefits/challenges, I just have been too busy fighting fascism/other things to fucking change my OS (not swearing at you, swearing at the Linux sneerers).
Plus there are plenty of folks who simply can't for many reasons.
We need less snark, more solidarity.
And lawsuits for MS!
@cpereira I really wish people would be honest about Linux: “it’s not fast and easy to switch, it will take some getting used to, but in the end, you’ll have given the middle finger to the broligarchs and opted out of their AI bullshit”
(Maybe—apparently AI is shoved in Red Hat or whatever Linux version is controlled by broligarches)
The sneering about how it’s so easy and people are dumb for not switching just stops people from considering it.
Sent this to my husbsnd who complained about Copilot annoying gim at work ( at home we have Linux).
He followed the instruktion and it worked.
The Fediverse Tech Support once more made someone happy.
@fedops haha yes, very true
And yet still critically important to push back, fight this, even if it's just searching "how do I get this AI shite off my computer" so they see a storm of refusal with every update

if you think Windows is any easier ...
Sure, Windows works for some people. But what this thread was discussing was using regedit to create a new, undocumented, key and give it a DWORD value, and Linux is never goind to require you to do anything as obscure as that.
@simon_brooke literally every Linux command is "obscure" to people unfamiliar with it. There's very little intuitive in Linux for Windows users.
I used Linux for years, years go. I've been delaying installing it because it is FAR more work than updating the registry. When folks talk about Linux like it's not a big lift for Windows folks to switch, it's just a way to make sure their expectations are bad and they're more likely to quit.
no. No, really it isn't. You put in the installer, you answer a few questions through a GUI, and unless you're running some particularly obscure hardware, you sit back for twenty minutes.
And then you're done.
Try it if you don't believe me.
There are USB plugin WiFi adaptors which are still a pain, but not many.

You’re gonna be mad, but this includes FlatHub.
Edit: since people keep not getting it, this is not a criticism of Flatpak or Flathub. Flatpak is a fanstastic technology. Flathub is a fantastic App Store.
Flathub should not be the only popular Flatpak App Store. You should not be required to ship Flathub to get freedesktop runtime updates. The centralization is the problem
autistics.life/@JeremyMallin/1…
I think people are getting the wrong lesson from AWS and Cloudflare outages.Yes, tech shouldn't be consolidated into near monopolies.
But the real lesson is that consolidation is bad for *everything* in every industry. Monopolies are always bad. The capitalism that leads to monopolies is equally so.
Important infrastructure of any kind should not be operated at the whim of capitalists. It should be public.
Cryptica😸💖 reshared this.
because:
1. Developers not packaging their apps with the correct permissions is a developer problem and
2. Allowing apps to be published by someone other than the developer is a Flathub problem
Neither of these issues are inherent to Flatpak. Your post is a complete non-sequitor. My post was about centralization not about the problems you are having
I understand this from a technical perspective, but what does this look like from a people perspective?
Are we talking about having 12 to 15 different organizations? Hundreds of humans responsible for quality assurance on their respective "app stores".
I have no idea how we fund that outside of since government-led initiatives.
How would you like this new universe to be structured?
@gatesvp I mean yeah the same exact way we have a bunch of mastodon instances each with their own rules and mods etc. you yourself are not on mastodon.social
Each remote would have far fewer apps. Many remotes would probably be single-app. App developers would pick a remote with rules they like and publish there or self-host
yeah, I'm on mstdn.ca, I'm also a donor here. But we're built on the back of a super dedicated volunteer and we're mostly just shipping around small blobs of text. That's cheap, people run small servers out of their houses.
But Flatpak delivery for a successful product would be 10x or 100x as expensive to deliver just purely from a bandwidth perspective. Let alone things like package review.
I love the notion that app developers get to pick which remote they use. This would be useful technology. But I'm not convinced that it solves the very human problem of having trusted and well-funded institutions to deliver those remotes. And that trust is a core part of the change you're trying to make.
So my question for you, what do those new institutions look like? The ones that replace Flathub?
the average Flatpak app on AppCenter is a smaller file size than its own screenshots. Our DO droplet for 100+ apps is $20/mo IIRC
Sure the most popular and largest remotes should be run by trusted institutions like we trust distribution repositories right now. But the sandboxed nature of Flatpak apps makes this less necessary. Your App Store client warns you about the kinds of permissions apps have already. I trust a random Flatpak remote far more than I’d trust the AUR for example
i know it's going to be a hot take, but decentralisation just for the sake of it isn't exactly the best idea.
I'm not really against there being many different flatpak remotes (that's the point of flatpak!). There's place for them, just like there is place for Flathub Beta, GNOME Nightly and KDE Nightly remotes. Flathub is an amazing opportunity to finally close the gap of "everyone doing their own thing in the corner", and there being different remotes for, e.g. Adwaita, GTK and Qt apps, idk, but it kinda feels forced.
And there's also cases like Fedora flatpaks, but it's not really the same. It's more of a case where distro doesn't want to give up their "everything I touch is blessed" dogma.
@tragivictoria real problems I have right now and people have also expressed to me having:
* There’s no way to ship a web browser or a video player without Flathub because freedesktop runtimes are hosted there
* I only really want remotes with Granite and Adwaita apps because KDE and electron apps don’t integrate as well
* I don’t really want a remote that allows apps with bigoted authors like Brave
It’s not “for the sake of it”. There are already real life problems
Users having to specifically go out of their way to install another remote for, idk, KPatience or Steam isn't the greatest UX. Artificially excluding them will just make the user think they're unsupported (because I doubt most people will understand what "remote" is).
As for Brave, I also don't like it. But I believe this should be tried to be worked out within Flathub (even tho i really doubt anything is going to happen with it, seeing how even most disgusting cases were ignored in the past).
while I do agree in spirit, this sounds like 'premature decentralization'.
We can't simply have a remote just for a specific category, because there are numerous apps whose functionality intertwine with multiple categories. For example, if we want a remote for "games", where would that put Bottles? Bottles isn't a game, it's an app that happens to allow us to run games (with tooling for gaming too). That's just a superficial example, but it's not uncommon to find software that cover multiple categories.
For single-app remotes and making them discoverable, this honestly feels like the current problem in disguise. We'd essentially turn single-app remotes into glorified apps with extra steps: instead of installing the app, you'd have to add the remote and install the app. If we want to make single-app remotes more discoverable, you'd basically have a 'remote of remotes'. If your end goal with this was to have more control on filtering remotes, then you could as well just filter the apps themselves. Fedora used to do that a few years ago.
For platform-specific remotes, while the thought does make sense, I worry it will be unscalable, as platforms will have their own inclusion policies, for better or for worse. In the case of GNOME, I assume that it will be limited to GNOME Circle apps and upwards. My apps aren't in Circle, and I don't want to put them there anytime soon, so the chance to be in that theoretical remote would be extremely unlikely.
@TheEvilSkeleton I don’t think we should have a remote for every category. Games was a specific example more so because they rarely use a native toolkit and could have a different licensing or monetization model like a subscription for example. That just happened to also be kind of a category but that wasn’t my intention in listing it
The kinds of differences between Flathub and AppCenter currently for example are allowed licenses, platforms, monetization, those things matter to people

Here's the secret to how it works, and why it's so difficult for white women to understand.
If you don't get what you need from the whim, grace, or mercy of someone above you in the tier of power, then you are expected to get it from someone below you.
This works ALL the way down. (And it works similarly in other hierarchical countries and cultures with races and ethnicities swapped out.) But speaking of the US, it goes in order of how rich and/or powerful you are, then gender, then race. Other status markers include disability, immigration status, queerness, and neurodiversity in a complex mix of factors.
If you're a rich white man, nearly everyone is beneath you and expected to be a source of needs-fulfillment. Then to the lower-upper and middle class white men. Then to white women. Then to their children and POC. Men of color are expected to get it from women of color, and so on. Sometimes earned money, status, or success can buy someone some status, but you'll see it often doesn't go very far when ranks are tested.
When anyone below expects equal treatment from some above, and the high status person's whims, grace, or mercy aren't willing to give, they'll form resentment. When external rules demand truly equal application (like on a Netflix show or DEI), it generates a well of chaotic emotions for anyone who hasn't unpacked. Because where else is someone on the middle rung supposed to get their needs from?? Certainly not from anyone above.
White women are in a bit of a pickle — unless we unite to dump the whole model! We're key to toppling this system! But it's too easy for us to stick to the old unexamined habits and expect those beneath us to fulfill their roles. Because it isn't fair to us! It actually isn't! But it's not fair to anyone else either, and the order of fairness gets worse the further down you go.
🧵
#WhitenessIsACult #AbuseCulture #decolonize defcon.social/@corbden/1155614…
You'll also see, as you set aside ridiculous myths about how racism works, that sometimes POC act like asshats, too. If you're not using their behavior to justify the poor behavior of white folks, you'll learn that everyone is unique, and we all react to our oppression differently. A number of featured Black players in previous episodes were misogynistic or opportunistic or unfeeling or antisocial. But not a one of them seethed like this white man scorned, and the white woman who followed his lead. The others all accepted their losses with grace. It wasn't personal, just a game, because they're all used to losing sometimes. They're especially used to losing to other POC, white people, and women. I can relate, because as an autistic nonbinary woman who worked in STEM, yeah, I learned when to accept my defeat and vanish from the spotlight.
But this guy clearly had never lost to a Black woman before. His ego was bleeding out all over that playing board.
I don't think he even realized what was happening to him, this conditioning playing out in him like the tool he is.
#WhitenessIsACult #AbuseCulture #decolonize #RealityTV
Cryptica😸💖 reshared this.
Scarcity is key to all of this, because if we could magically get our needs met from just anywhere, the whole model collapses. Now we aren't desperate and unsafe and clawing at each other for survival. Then the middle-rung won't knee-jerk enforce the inequalities on behalf of the top rung.
Inequality doesn't work without us. We're complicit — but also in a very powerful position, if we'd see it, and if we could understand that it requires us to lift up those beneath us, or better, demolish the assumptions and end the scarcity model on behalf of everyone. Shift the burden of scarcity upwards, to those who hoard plenty. Turn the ladder upside down!
Anything else is just shifting the status quo ever so slightly in our own favor. Which, given that we KNOW what it's like to be trodden on, is morally disgusting.
🧵
Isn't it nuts that we expect the people with the least to provide the most??
But that's how it is. By design. Because we let the people with the worst morals and intentions create the culture and the system.
It doesn't have to be this way.
🧵
