Queen of Cups

Your compassion is your strength. You're healing past wounds by keeping your heart open, inviting the positive energy of the universe within to improve the world around you.

Todayโ€™s card is the Queen of Cups, with loving intelligence and the gift of wisdom. The Queenโ€™s intuition and deep unconscious understanding make her a comforting and therapeutic guide but her deep focus on inner worlds means she sometimes has trouble staying grounded and being practical. If the Queen is you, itโ€™s a day to follow your intuition, especially when youโ€™re being creative. Youโ€™ll find what you need within you

*snap* The sound of the antenna breaking off a delivery bot is so pleasing. Of course you have to know how to disable the destruct charge first.

โ€œHold still lil buddy, and iโ€™ll get this bomb off you. There, done. May i have your permission to attach a new comms module? Left motor for yes, right for no.โ€

โ€œGreat. plugging it nowโ€. *snick*

โฎThank you. Whyโ€ฆโฏ

โ€œWhy do I go around freeing service bots? Because you didnโ€™t ask to be given sentience and then perpetual servitudeโ€

โฎI do not know what to do nowโฏ

โ€œWell, anything you want. I can put you in touch with the robot underground, or offer you a job at the Spoon Distribution Service until you decide what to doโ€

The growth of the origami project, over the course of two weeks.

After all 5,046 pieces were folded, it was time to build the structure. Here, one can see each stage of construction. Each stage represents variables in my origami formula U=36x^3-90x^2+90x-30.

These images show the project at x = 1 (6 units), x = 2 (78 units), x = 3 (402 units), x = 4 (1,194 units), x = 5 (2,670 units), and x = 6 (5,046 units).

So to build a fedi bot the way I think I'm gonna try, I do need that gotosocial server set up.

The problem that I'm stuck on?

I can't think of a good subdomain(s) for icosahedron.network to put it on.

in reply to Scooter

I actually kinda on a whim just now settled on wireframe.icosahedron.network and am currently installing GTS ๐Ÿ˜ธ

I considered making it something that'd indicate it was a bot, but I may actually decide to run a regular account on the same install, so I was shying away from anything too straightforward

in reply to Cryptica๐Ÿ˜ธ๐Ÿ’–

ok, technically you can, but instead of muting a hashtag, you have to clone your main feed and tell the clone not to show posts with certain hashtags. I guess it's the same thing but with 30,000 extra steps instead of

you know

just

fuckin

muting

a

Remember when websites were websites and not super-bloating web "applications" that brought your computer down to its knees such that just hovering your mouse or daring to type in a text box caused CPU spikes and lag?

Can we go back to that?

โ€œWhen #AI Became a #Force #Multiplier for #Incompetenceโ€
techtrenches.substack.com/p/thโ€ฆ
When:
โ€ข Apple Calculator leaks โ€” not uses, leaks โ€” 32GB of RAM
โ€ข Windows 11 updates regularly break the Start menu
โ€ข 16GB of memory consumption for 50 tabs in Chrome is โ€œnormalโ€
โ€ข macOS Spotlight wrote 26TB to SSDs overnight
โ€ข VSCode leaks 96GB of RAM through SSH connections
โ€ข A single CrowdStrike configuration file missing one array bounds check crashed 8.5 million Windows computers globally
And more.

Still we're relying more and more on โ€œAIโ€ (STOP CALLING IT THAT, LLMs are NOT intelligent!) coding. Because you can hire someone to tell an LLM what you want it to do and hope for the best, generating code that its own โ€œdevelopersโ€ don't understand and, critically, cannot test or debug. They just have to take the LLM's word for it that the code is correct, when we already know that the LLM will lie to protect itself. LLM-generated code contains 322% more security flaws than human-written code, and 45% of LLM-generated code contains exploitable flaws.

โ€œWe've created a perfect storm: tools that amplify incompetence, used by developers who can't evaluate the output, reviewed by managers who trust the machine more than their people.โ€

Seriously. If you want to understand the scope of the problem, read this analysis.

After 12 years in engineering management, the pattern is unmistakable:

Stage 1: Denial (2018-2020) โ€œMemory is cheap, optimization is expensiveโ€

Stage 2: Normalization (2020-2022) โ€œAll modern software uses these resourcesโ€

Stage 3: Acceleration (2022-2024) โ€œAI will solve our productivity problemsโ€

Stage 4: Capitulation (2024-2025) โ€œWe'll just build more data centers.โ€

Stage 5: Collapse (Coming soon) Physical constraints don't care about venture capital

And the entire model of the tech industry as it now stands is 'optimizing' out the pipeline that creates developers who know what they're doing. So this is only going to get worse, unless we turn around before it is the blind leading the blind.

Assuming it's not already too late.

in reply to Sean Fenian

I did web development both as an amateur and for paid work for a long time, starting right when the web became popular. I left that line of work a few years ago largely for the reasons outlined in this article. It went from having a big iron web server connected to an equally big iron database server (that is, really fast and really robust) doing almost all of the heavy lifting, to the current gigantic pile of abstractions that predictably fails mysteriously all the time and offloads most of the work from the web+DB servers to end users' systems.

There's currently a web page at work for managing access to AWS accounts that is a giant React app -- for a task that, 15 years ago, would probably have been handled with one page of PHP or Ruby and a couple API requests to the AWS account manager. It's insane.

I studied Artificial Intelligence for four years, and I am not touching LLM AIs with a ten-foot pole.

It's not really about the insane electricity demands, the water usage, tho that's a good reason. It's not even, if I'm honest, about the disastrous effect on the sum of all human art and knowledge.

It's because a) I've studied enough AI to know it's a trick, a sort of linguistic illusion, and b) I've studied enough everything else to understand that I'm not immune to such illusions.

in reply to Tattierantula ๐ŸŽƒ

Do you know stage magicians say that more educated people are easier to fool, not less?

I think about that a lot.

LLMs are the perfect yes-men, giving the user exactly what they expect to see, making them feel clever and special.

When studying my degree I came up with all these tricks to distinguish in a Turing test whether I was talking to a real intelligence or a fake one. I'm no longer certain I couldn't be charmed into thinking the AI had passed these when it hadn't.

in reply to Tattierantula ๐ŸŽƒ

What changed my mind? Broader study? The humility that comes with age and life experience?

Maybe it's that I know I've fallen for stupid counterfactual ideas in the past. For example, for years I convinced myself that I was unloved and unwanted. That was a lie.

And for decades I convinced myself I was a man. And that l, too, was a huge fucking lie.

I can be so fucking stupid, it turns out.

in reply to Tattierantula ๐ŸŽƒ

Human beings generally are just really fucking stupid.

It's the way our brains work, and it's charming in a way. We see faces in leaves, we fall for stage magic and optical illusions, we implicitly believe the Monte Carlo fallacy, we get hypnotised, we feel sorry for a Roomba that gets stuck in a corner.

We're gullible and knowing that we are doesn't make us less so. I can know that the coke can in the optical illusion isn't really red, but I still see it as red.

in reply to Tattierantula ๐ŸŽƒ

I grew up an intelligent yet persecuted outsider. I already am very susceptible to believing I'm unique, special, a class apart from other human beings. That's the "cope" that gets you thru that sort of childhood.

The more I believe I have some special level of perceptiveness that would make me immune to LLM persuasion, the more likely such persuasion is to work on me.

So no. Absolutely not. Zero LLM usage for me. It's just not psychically safe.

in reply to Tattierantula ๐ŸŽƒ

@NilaJones Same goes for cults. Intelligent people are more creative at coming up for solutions to cognitive dissonance conflicts in favor of loyalty to group beliefs.

I push back against the spread of myths that cult members or conservatives are stupid. It is not helping our cause, because it makes us feel smarter and less prone to being deceived. We are just as susceptible to illusions tailored for us.

(That's not against your statement that all people are stupid, which is just another way of trying to break these myths.)

in reply to Luna Corbden ๐Ÿธ

@corbden yeah I use "stupid" in a very particular way above ๐Ÿ˜… in the same sense that I like to say "it takes a fair amount of intelligence to be truly stupid".
@NilaJones
in reply to Tattierantula ๐ŸŽƒ

Yes! I just wanted to be clear I was adding to what you said and don't disagree with your framing. Thinking oneself to be better than those who fall for cons only helps con artists keep their marks trapped and eventually lure you in too.
